State partners with Medicaid MCOs to secure data and ensure timely payments during Change Healthcare cybersecurity breach

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) is collaborating with Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) to protect provider and customer data due to the service outage at Change Healthcare, a key provider of health care management and payment solutions that recently experienced a cybersecurity issue.

“Together with our MCO partners we are navigating through the complexities of the Change Healthcare cybersecurity disruption to uphold the integrity of our health system and the well-being of our Medicaid customers,” said Dana Flannery, Medicaid Director.

Each of the state’s current Medicaid MCOs BlueCross BlueShield of New Mexico, Presbyterian Health Plan, and Western Sky Community Care has taken actions to protect provider data and ensure timely claims payments. These actions include, allowing alternative methods to submit claims and helping transition to another source for claim submission. Additionally, they have established specialized, trained provider customer service units to address provider support needs and are actively monitoring claims volume.

Medicaid providers encountering any issues related to this situation are encouraged to directly contact their MCO. As a preemptive measure, HSD has suspended activity between Change Healthcare and any internal Medicaid systems.

HSD is committed to collaborating with MCOs and Medicaid customers to ensure timely information and support throughout this challenging period.
