Request For Public Comments and Suggestions on Medicaid in New Mexico
The budget for Fiscal Year 2017 passed by the state Legislature increases Medicaid spending. However, due to Medicaid enrollment growth and a decrease in federal funding, there’s a significant shortfall in state funding to maintain the current program. Given this shortfall, the Legislature also directed the Human Services Department to make numerous adjustments to the State’s Medicaid program in order to reduce spending and curb further substantial increases in Medicaid spending in the coming year.
These adjustments include “reducing reimbursement rates paid to Medicaid providers, including physicians and hospitals,” “additional cost-sharing requirements for recipients of Medicaid services, including co-payments for certain services and monthly premiums for certain individuals,” “changes to the amount, duration and scope of allowable Medicaid services,” and “processes to enhance eligibility verification.” The exact language can be found here.
Centennial Care has been improving the delivery system in New Mexico with its focus on integrated care, including robust care coordination, and moving toward paying providers for achieving improved quality and better health outcomes for members.
To accommodate enrollment growth and continue improving the Medicaid program while meeting the budget requirements set by the Legislature, the Human Services Department is engaging stakeholders through public Medicaid Advisory Committee meetings and seeking input from New Mexicans on how best to address the budgetary shortfall.
