Goal: Is to reduce the number of successful illegal purchases by minors to no more than 20 percent of attempted buys by minors in New Mexico.
Merchant Education
Every Synar Prevention Provider is assigned a list of tobacco merchants located throughout New Mexico in their geographic coverage areas. The Synar Prevention Provider will visit each merchant’s location annually to train the manager and/or staff on the laws stated under the New Mexico Tobacco Products Act,the penalties and fines for illegal sales, the importance to ask for identification on all sales, and signage will be provided to the merchant. The signage must be posted in visible places advised by the Prevention Provider; also, a tobacco retailer kit will be provided to the merchant in an effort to better assist in the training merchant staff.
